The Hungarian uprising was squelched by the Soviets just as he was being elected to a second term, and the problems were compounded by the Suez crisis, which left a vacuum of power in that region. Just weeks before this speech, he appeared before Congress to proclaim the Eisenhower Doctrine and seek authority to intervene militarily in the Middle East; eventually, he would send Marines into Lebanon.
